Fortress - I Will Trust (Psalm 91)

TRACK 2: "I Will Trust (Psalm 91)" [LYRICS]

"Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty." Psalm 91:1

Rest.

Probably the most difficult concept to learn in life.

There is always something to do. Always something demanding our attention. Something always requiring our energy and effort.

In our culture, we are defined by what we do. Our identity is wrapped up in our accomplishments and job titles.

We are what we do. According to our world, anyway.

According to God it is completely different, though.

The first track, "Come to Me", on my EP "Fortress" is an invitation to come and rest. Track two , "I Will Trust (Psalm 91)", is all about that covering we see in Psalm 91. And it is under that covering, in that rest, that our true identity is bestowed.

Only in the quiet shelter of the fortress of God can we truly know who we are.

We spend so much time striving and searching. We exhaust ourselves with tasks, often noble and honorable tasks. We get worn down by life. Worn down by placing our trust in things and people that let us down. And then we put our trust in ourselves. And then we let ourselves down.

Yet, God patiently, steadily and faithfully calls out; "Come to me!", "Rest in me!", and "Trust in me!"

"The Lord says, 'I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name.'" - Ps 91:14 NLT

So, what does it mean to trust God? What does it mean to live in the shelter of the Almighty?

I'm still discovering this for myself, but one thing I have learned is that it begins with recognizing how much we really do NEED to REST. It begins with going before God with whatever you're dealing with, no matter your circumstances, and beginning the process of laying your burdens down. Surrendering. Receiving.

One of my worship pastor friends recently shared with me that he and his wife read Psalm 91 together DAILY. That is powerful! We could all use that kind of covering spoken over our lives each day. Our soul craves that.

It is tough to rest.

It is tough to trust.

But, God aches to meet us there, in that quiet space. He longs to give us the gift of rest.

And when we lay down whatever is crushing us, whatever is stressing us out, we find that the yoke that God has for us is so much better, and easier, and LIGHTER.

So, I encourage you to make room in your day to get quiet before the Lord. Allow Him to speak over you, to sing over you. Rest in the shadow of the Almighty, today and every day.

He is a strong tower. A citadel or serenity. A fortress.

Trust in Him, the rock of your salvation.
