VIDEO: Spinning (Rhodes) + Studio Scobie Demo

Posted by Kurt Scobie on March 5, 2018

This world seems to get a little crazier at every turn. The media perpetuates a mad cycle of a charged political climate and bombardment of "news" which continues the insanity. Meanwhile, our souls are starving for connection and authentic community, which, our (anti) social-media has robbed us of.

I wrote this song "Spinning" as a simple observation of the self-centeredness that, as far as I can see, is at the root of the madness.

Check out the acoustic-Rhodes version on YouTube and then hop on over to SoundCloud for the Studio Scobie Demo arrangement.

Enjoy!

Three Updates for 2018! (Number 3 is My Favorite)

Posted by Kurt Scobie on February 6th, 2018

Yesterday on Instagram, I posted a three-part update on my Story about some exciting things coming down the pipeline for me in the near future. In case you missed it, here's what I've got planned in the upcoming weeks of 2018...

1. VIDEOS
You may have seen the video, Come Alive (Acoustic), I posted in late January to YouTube of a new original song. One thing I will be doing more of in 2018 is posting these kinds of videos! I have been writing a lot lately, and I am eager to get these songs out there. The next one will be make an appearance around Valentine's Day ?

2. DEMOS
I began dabbling with some recording software at the end of 2017. And, while I make no claims to be even close to a professional producer, I wanted to share some ideas I have been working on. Each month, coinciding with the acoustic videos, I will be releasing a new demo track (or two). So, TODAY, you can listen to the Studio Scobie Demo of Come Alive via SoundCloud.

3. STEP INTO MY STORY  The third and final update, and the most exciting, is that I am heading into the studio to record a single! I released a live version of this song a few years ago, but I am really excited to take Step Into My Story to the next level. Pre-production has already begun and we will be tracking piano and vocals in the coming weeks. This is one of my favorites of all my original songs, so this project is really exciting for me.

Sean Hill at Uphill Studios here in Atlanta will be producing this single for me. He's worked with a TON of artists and I've done some writing with him and worked on a few other projects with him as well. He's the real deal and I trust him completely in bringing this song to life in the studio.

I'll be sharing updates along the way, so be sure to follow me on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. There are some really cool things in the works for this project, which I will share another time. For now, I'm signing off.

Thank you for your support!

Kurt

VIDEO: Come Alive (Acoustic)

Published by Kurt Scobie on January 29th, 2018

One goal I have for 2018 is to record several videos of my original songs and get them up on YouTube. I had a few last year, but I have more new songs to share. And there are even more to be written!

This video is of a song I wrote a few years ago. Come Alive is is a personal anthem about breaking through the things that keep us from becoming and thriving as our truest selves. I believe that God created each person with a purpose and a calling that, when realized, allows us to live in freedom and joy.

"Let it ring
This freedom song I sing
This peace and life in me
Let it ring
Let it ring"

All In (Acoustic Rhodes Version) [VIDEO]

Posted by Kurt Scobie on July 18, 2017

I recorded this video a while ago, and I FINALLY had a chance to upload it to YouTube. I am rediscovering my love for the Rhodes sound these days. I hope you enjoy this version of All In as much as I enjoyed singing it.

All In

All In -
December 1, 2015 -

---

I've spent way too much time and energy building my avatar.

So much of life these days is spent hiding behind screens that we have forgotten how to live in the real world. EVERYTHING we do, it seems, requires us to be handcuffed to our devices. Or, more accurately, our vices. We're enslaved to selfish selfie-ism and addicted to information. We're all just "playing it safe", disengaging our hearts and settling for passivity instead of engaging with passion.

We need saving.

And another meme won't save us. Another blog won't save us. Another powerful video won't either. Nor will a cause. Or any political or religious leader.

And, really, we can't even save ourselves. Though, we do have a part to play.

It has come down to one thing for me. Courage.

Our online avatars have built up a such a false sense of boldness that we no longer understand what true courage looks like. Courage isn't shouting your beliefs from your tiny social media platform. It isn't preaching from your blog (like I'm doing now).

One of my favorite quotes says it well:
"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy." - Dale Carnegie
Inaction is sharing yet another political article/video/meme on Facebook. Inaction is arguing in circles in comments on YouTube. If ever we needed a break from the internet, it is now. And I think that is the first step in taking real action.

I recently read a book by Mark Batterson called "All In" which had a profound impact on my life (and inspired my new single). Here's an excerpt that stood out to me:
"Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death.
Set God-sized goals. Pursue God-ordained passions. Go after a dream that is destined to fail without divine intervention.
Keep asking questions. Keep making mistakes. Keep seeking God. Stop pointing out problems and become part of the solution.
Stop repeating the past and start creating the future.
Stop playing it safe and start taking risks.
Expand your horizons. Accumulate experiences. Enjoy the journey.
Find every excuse you can to celebrate everything you can.
Live like today is the first day and the last day of your life.
Don't let what's wrong with you keep you from worshiping what's right with God.
Burn sinful bridges. Blaze new trails.
Don't let fear dictate your decisions. Take a flying leap of faith.
Quit holding out. Quit holding back.
Go all in with God. Go all out for God."
- Mark Batterson - "All In"

Whoa.

ALL in?

That's scary. And risky. And a little crazy.

Pursue "a dream that is destined to fail" unless God steps in? My guess is that has little to do with your recent post on Facebook.

And I am quite certain that the world is better off when we are fulfilling, with passion, the purpose we were created for.

So, how are you doing with that?

I know I've got a long way to go, but I'm taking baby steps. For me, going "all in" means powering down my smartphone and investing time with my family. Or closing my laptop and meeting a friend for coffee. Or trying something new. Or giving something up. For me, going "all in" means continuing to write songs like "All In" and then putting them out there to be accepted or rejected. I believe that music has the power to change minds and hearts and I have a responsibility to speak the truth through my songs. For me, going "all in" is engaging my heart, as painful or uncomfortable as it might be, in everything I do.

What does it mean for you to go "all in"?

"I'm all in
There is more that I was made for
Than standing on this safe shore
And living like I did before
All in
Stepping out into the open
Now my heart's awoken
I'm all in"

Fortress - New EP, New Blogs!

Posted by Kurt Scobie on July 1, 2015

It has been an exciting first-half of 2015!

I released my very first worship EP in April and it has been quite a ride. If you haven't checked it out yet, I'd love for you to go download it on iTunes (or listen via Spotify, if you must). I am excited to see where God is leading me with these songs. I have already had opportunities to share these songs at different churches where I sing and lead worship. You can check out a couple of those live recordings via SoundCloud.

If you haven't been following along, I have ANOTHER blog where I share my journey as a worship leader. I know you have plenty of reading material on this internet thing, but if you're standing in line at the DMV or something and you're tired of playing Candy Crush, I have a few blogs you can check out.

I wrote a series of 4 posts, that talk more in depth about my thoughts and prayers behind each of the tracks on the "Fortress" EP. For your convenience, I've provided links for you, below. :) Thanks for reading!

1. "Fortress - Come To Me" [TRACK 1] - http://www.kurtscobie.com/worship/blog/fortress-come-to-me

2. "Fortress - I Will Trust" [TRACK 2] - http://www.kurtscobie.com/worship/blog/fortress-i-will-trust-psalm-91

3. "Fortress - Lead Me (All I Want is You)" [TRACK 3] - http://www.kurtscobie.com/worship/blog/fortress-lead-me-all-i-want-is-you

Back to the Studio!

Posted by Kurt Scobie on June 24, 2015

New music is coming.

A couple weeks ago I made the long trek up to Michigan for a quick visit with family and, mainly, to record a new song I have been working on! Jake Rye, producer ("Crash" and "The Hopeful Broken") and bassist (Sanctus Real), put his golden touch on a catchy little tune... that I can't share with you just yet. Sorry!

But, I do have some photos.

I know, I'm not much of a photographer. But, I feel like I am supposed to do this whole social media/blogging thing to make sure you know I'm still alive and creating things. So, this is all you get!

Anyway, here are a few photos from the studio.

We had a blast and I am looking forward to when I will be able to share some new sounds that are in the works. Until then, here are some grainy, poorly lit pictures I took with my camera-phone. Enjoy!

My boy, Justin Boyd, made the trip from Atlanta with me to play drums! He killed it!

Big, scary vocal mic. But, I gave 'er a good fight!

Jake Rye, producer extraordinaire!

Tracking piano and RHODES! :)
Oops.
