2013 was probably the toughest year of my life. So much went wrong. So much attack from the enemy. So much stupidity on my part. So much "life" was thrown at me and my family. And, of course, there was a soundtrack to help me get through it.

I wore out the "Forever Reign" CD by Hillsong Chapel. That album was on repeat in the Scoburban on many long drives for most of last year. Actually, I just ordered another copy of it because I lost it when we moved and my CD collection just could not live without it.

One of the most powerful lyrics for me in the song "Rhythms of Grace" says "You're there in the dark of the night, while holding the sun and its light, through the triumph and trials alike, there's no one beside you."

Through trials, pain, trouble, storms, dark times, and turmoil, God is there. And during all of that, he is still holding the light. There is no one who can sit with us through both triumphs and trials like God can. He is always there. Always patient and kind. Always gracefully realigning our steps as we move through this life.

The key is to learn to continue to move forward, and not just repeat, over and over, the mistakes that cause so much pain. To learn how to lean more into God through trials. To trust Jesus, unlike the disciples in Mark 4:35-41, when he says “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake” and ride out the storm in faith.

I know I certainly have a long way to go when it comes to trusting Jesus like that. Sometimes I wonder if Jesus is asleep through my storms.

I suppose that just means that God is confident that we are going to make it to the other side.

Hallelujah!

There is none beside you, God!

I'm caught in the rhythms of grace
They overcome all of my ways
Realigning each step every day
To live for your glory  -Hillsong, "Rhythms of Grace"
