Fortress - Introduction

"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, 'He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.'” - Psalm 91:1-2 NKJV

for·tressnoun, a person or thing not susceptible to outside influence or disturbance; a military stronghold, especially a strongly fortified town fit for a large garrison.

It all began when I got to day 91 of a "Bible-in-a-year" reading plan on YouVersion.

Thank God for technology! When you stop and think about it, it is incredible that we can have the entire Bible (in many languages and translations) in our pockets, available to us at any moment. As long as our smartphone batteries don't die, we have the power of God's word at our fingertips, ready and waiting to be unlocked.

The reading plan I began in October of 2014 has given me a Psalm to read each day, while taking me through the Bible chronologically, Genesis to Revelation. It has been a fantastic journey. If you have never read through the entire Bible in one year, it is quite a worthwhile challenge to take on.

So, when I arrived at day 91, I also arrived at Psalm 91. And God was waiting there for me. I had no idea what all He had in store for me.

I'm glad I had the space in my life that day to process this psalm during my personal time of worship. I read through Psalm 91 over and over that day. Each time, powerful words kept popping out at me about God as my "fortress". Before long, those words made it to my little notebook and the melodies followed. That song, "I Will Trust (Psalm 91)", became the flagship composition for my worship EP "Fortress", and these blogs, and whatever else God might have planned.

The word "fortress" has been a recurring theme in my quiet times, and God has revealed so many powerful truths to me about who He is and how He covers those who trust in Him.

In these next few blogs I will be looking at each track from from "Fortress" and sharing some insights and thoughts I had while writing these songs.

I hope you find these posts helpful and that you will get a fresh understanding of God as your "Fortress".
