Blog Post by Kurt Scobie

www.kurtscobie.com/blogs

My travels in the Northeast continue after a few days in Charlotte, NC!

The NACA National Convention happens each year in February, bringing together musicians, comedians, and other entertainers as well as college programming board representatives from all over the country. You may have seen someof my posts on Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and Google+ from my time at #NACA2012

Here is a glimpse of my travels from Boston to Charlotte and back. Enjoy!

A foggy Boston skyline the morning I left the Northeast.

Smooth travels to Charlotte, where I was welcomed by sunshine!

The "Hoppyum" IPA! I had some time to kill waiting for my ride in Charlotte, so you know I just had to grab a local brew!

Hanging out at the Hey Cole Booth at the "Marketplace". Do I look tired?

The posters were hung in the booth with care...

My lovely wife came to see me while I was somewhat close to Atlanta.

The 2012 NACA National Convention Showcase Venue! I was a "showcase alternate" and didn't end up getting a showcase, but it was still a fun trip! Met a lot of interesting folks and had a blast in Charlotte!

Clear skies and smooth travels back to Boston!

Back in Boston and now it's snowing! Its pretty from my hotel window, but now I have to go drive in it. Showtime!

Thanks for following! Until next time...

"Pics From the Studio"Blog Post by Kurt ScobieFeb 21st, 2012www.kurtscobie.com/blogsMy new project is underway! The other day I went in to the Sonus Clarus studio to begin my next EP. A new batch of songs are now on their way through the recording process, which means it wont be too long before you'll be able to get your ears on some new music from me. In October of 2010 I recorded "Crash" with producer Jake Rye, so I am super excited to begin this process with him again. I'll be stopping in Michigan several times within the next few months (between my northern travels) to work on the new EP.I'll keep you posted on the progress along the way.
The Travel Madness Begins

"The Travel Madness Begins"
Blog post by Kurt Scobie
February 2nd, 2012
www.kurtscobie.com/blogs

My performance at Ferris State University on February 14th is the first of about 30 college shows -within a two month time span. In March, almost every week I have five college shows. On top of that, I'll be filling in the holes with clubs, coffeehouses, house concerts and anything else I can. The madness has begun.

I am a little nervous, since earlier this week I was in an accident that left my tour vehicle (my trusty Chevy S-10) TOTALED. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but now I am a little over a week away from leaving and I have no car. The rental I have right now is pretty sweet... but at $63 a day (plus about $80 to gas up) I'm gonna need something a tad more practical. Needless to say, I have begun a new full time job: CAR SHOPPING.

I'm sure that everything will work out just fine. I am really excited about the next two months! I have met some of the most interesting people over the last two years of playing at colleges. The coming weeks I'm sure will bring new friends and a bunch of new stories to tell. Thanks for reading! I look forward to sharing my tour tales with you.

Here's where I'll be performing in the next few weeks. If you're nearby, come and say hi.

Feb 14th - Ferris State University (Big Rapids, MI)
Feb 15th - Rubble's Bar (Mount Pleasant, MI)
Feb 16th - Lake Superior State University (Sault Saint Marie, MI)
Feb 21st - SUNY Upstate (Syracuse, MI)
Feb 23rd - Western Connecticut State University (Danbury, CT)
Feb 29th - Bay State College (Boston, MA)

Looking Back on 2011

If there is one word that sums up my 2011, it is GRATITUDE.

I am infinitely thankful for the incredible opportunities I had, the meaningful work I accomplished, and the fascinating people I met. Truly. 2011 was an unforgettable year. It certainly did not lack challenge (wich is my second choice for "word of the year'), but even the challenges brought about things to be thankful for.

This post is an attempt to give you a recap and point out some things that stood out for me last year.

CRASH
January 4th was the release of my very first solo studio project. I had the distinct pleasure of working with one of the music industry's finest producers, Jake Rye at Sonus Clarus Media Group to create this EP. "Crash" was a fun project that allowed me to learn and grow as a recording artist all the while making something that I am STILL proud of today. Back in high school I "released" a couple of "records" which I thought were SO GOOD... for about a week. But, this CD has been time-tested and I know that I will be proud of it for years to come. I cannot express how thankful I am for those who helped me make this project happen. "Crash" was an awesome start to 2011 and it set the stage for a fun year of sharing the music with new fans in new places.

The "Crash" EP just after they arrived at my doorstep (and just in time for the CD release show)

TRAVELS WEST
I love traveling. I recommend it. Everyone needs to experience life outside their own world. My travels to the West were horizon-broadening, for sure! Between January and May of last year I performed for the first time in California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Colorado. I cannot wait to go back! The people were some of the coolest I've met, and the scenery... well... here's a tiny snapshot of all I got to see:

Picture taken while flying to Seattle. I believe this is Mount Rainier.

MUSIC VIDEO
Now this was fun! I had done my part in creating the music, so all I had to do was sit back and watch other people create the visual. I am SO thankful for my talented friends at Three Ring Media for taking on this project. They put a lot of thought and planning into this and I cannot thank them enough. I also had some help from friends who were extras and those who helped fund the project.

1000 MILES
Not only did I put some serious mileage on my trusty S-10 pick-up, but I had a stellar year of RUNNING some serious mileage as well. You could say I caught the "running bug" in 2011. I ran my first 10k, my first half-marathon, AND ran over a thousand miles last year. Plus, I had some awesome supporters who helped me raise $1000 for non-profit As Our Own. I "ran for Valarri" in the Atlanta Half-Marathon on Thanksgiving to raise funds and awareness for human trafficking. I felt incredibly honored to be able to run for such a worthy cause.

Run on Dec 31st brought my Nike+iPod mileage to exactly 1000 miles!

SHOWCASES
I had the opportunity to showcase my music for thousands of people between four different performances at the end of 2011. Showcases in Myrtle Beach, Cincinnati, Syracuse, and Hartford have lead to a BUNCH of shows for 2012. I am PUMPED to get back out on the road again this year and share my music. Of these four showcases, I received the greatest response from the Northeast region of the U.S. so I am gearing up for travels to Massachusetts, New York, Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and New Hampshire.

Showcasing at NACA Northeast Nov 17th, 2011

REST
2011 ended with some much needed rest and relaxation time with my wife. We had the opportunity to get away to Charleston, SC for Christmas and spent New Years in Atlanta. It was low-key and perfect. I enjoyed several different craft beers (Mmmm.. IPAs), some amazing sushi, caught up a little on "Parks and Recreation" and "Psych", and started off 2012 worshiping with my Victory World Church family.

GRATITUDE
There's so much more. 2011 was an unforgettable year. I can only imagine what this upcoming year will hold. I just know that I have much to be thankful for. And if 2012 is be anything like I think it will be, grattitude will win "word of the year" twice in a row.

Thankful.

I figured I was due for a Folds cover. People often ask if I listened to Ben Folds a lot growing up. But, he's actually not much of an influence for me. This might surprise you, but up until a few years ago the only Ben Folds song I had ever heard, was "Brick". Thankfully, someone pointed me to more of his music. This month's cover song is one of my favorites to play.So here you have it. My cover of "The Luckiest". Enjoy!-Kurt

"The Wake" (Single) - Kurt Scobie [Original]

My new tune "The Wake" hit iTunes today! I am very excited about this release and for what is to come. I wrote this song as I was thinking about the issue of human trafficking and those enslaved in the sex-trade industry. There are some heartbreaking stories and statistics out there and I wanted to send a message to these victims that there is HOPE. That they are not alone. I believe that there is a rescuer for each one of us no matter what we are a prisoner to.
God Gave Me You - Kurt Scobie [Cover]

One of my favorite artists, Dave Barnes, released a song called "God Gave Me You" on his "What We Want, What We Get" album (2010). It is a well-crafted song and has gained quite a bit of attention. Country star (and judge on NBC's "The Voice") Blake Shelton just released his version of this song on his "Red River Blue" album (2011). "God Gave Me You" has become a favorite of mine and I thought it would be a good one to kick-off my cover-song-a-month video series.
If you get a chance, you should check out Dave Barnes' music AND his YouTube videos. He's hilarious. You'll like him. But first, I hope you'll enjoy my rendition of "God Gave Me You"

Thanks to the "GroupEase" team from the Music Business program at Kennesaw State University for helping me with this project. They will be working with me to bring you a new video each month on my blog. I hope you like it, and will share with your friends.
Enjoy.Kurt

Bloggin' from Denver!

It's 90 degrees here in Denver so I thought I'd grab some a/c and check in with you blog-readers.

I have been in Colorado this past week for wedding festivities as well as some performances. Shows at The Walnut Room and Spotlight Music Cafe went very well and I can't wait for another trip out here! Here is a quick pic from the other night. Fort Collins is a very welcoming place :)

If you have been following my Email Updates, Facebook posts, or Twitter tweets lately you have probably heard the big news here in KS land. With the excitement of BABY SCOBIE coming at the end of this year there is much to celebrate around here. My wife, Elizabeth, is almost 18 weeks along and as the baby grows, so does our excitement. There is no denying how miraculous this whole process is. God's orchestration just blows my mind.

So what do I do when major things happen? Write. SO, a NEW SONG is on the way! Check out the (blurry) pic below from the studio. My single "The Lullaby" is set to release digitally on Oct. 18th. Some of you have already had a chance to check it out at a live show. The rest of you will just have to wait :)

Welp, that's all from me. Thanks for checking out the blog. There will be more pics to come. Gender ultrasound, anyone? :)

Peace.

Rain

My last few trips have had a lot of it. I recently toured with Sarah Peacock to Philly and Pittsburgh where we had non-stop precipitation. And now, St. Louis is giving me the same attitude. Meanwhile, I saw on the news this morning that Texas is in for one of the worst dry seasons in a long time. Crazy. Thankfully, I didn't fly to St. Louis for this trip because the airport is shut down. Yup. Closed. A tornado ripped the roof off of one of the terminals last night. Oh, and there were baseball-sized hailstones falling. Thankfully, I was inside.I have much to be thankful for these days. Here's a quick (and incomplete) list:-Health-Supportive and wise friends-The opportunity and ability to help people who need help-A bank account not in the red-Time on the road, meeting new and cool people-The opportunity to reach new people with my music-A Square card reader (I'm a geek, but it's just freakin' awesome)-A cell phone to keep in touch with family & friends-An understanding and respectful wife who just GETS me-RainI could keep going. I should keep going. It is good to realize and write down all that you have been blessed with. Especially those "opportunities" that feel more like inconveniences. In all honesty, I put that last one on the list reluctantly. It is difficult when going through a time of growth to count what is growing you as a blessing. Rain is wet and cold and makes the world all gray and... bleh! Not to mention the havoc it causes when driving through D.C. (turning a 5.5 hour trip from Richmond to Philly into a 7.5 hour trip). Not exactly the kind of "blessing" we pray for. But, I forget about the renewal that comes with the rain. I forget about the growth that it brings. Even destructive tornados and flooding can wash away the old to make way for the new. Yes, it's hard. Even devastating. But, when the storms clear it's time to rebuild. Communities come together and often grow closer and stronger after disasters strike. On the news this morning, while showing all of the storm damage here in St. Louis, they were saying that NO ONE was killed in the storms. No one! Buildings can be rebuilt. Cars can be repaired. Human life is more fragile. And important. No one was killed - THAT is something to be thankful for.I have been listening to Sara Bareilles a lot lately. Fanatically. Maybe even a little unhealthily. Her song "Let the Rain" says this:"And I always felt it beforethat the world was filled with much morethan the drowning soul I've learned to beI just need the rain to remind me"For me, rain is a reminder. Of growth. Of renewal. Of new life. It reminds me that even though my circumstances seem dreary, there is a better version of myself on the other side of this rainy day. What "rainy" circumstance are YOU thankful for?

And now, St. Louis is giving me the same attitude. Meanwhile, I saw on the news this morning that Texas is in for one of the worst dry seasons in a long time. Crazy. Thankfully, I didn't fly to St. Louis for this trip because the airport is shut down. Yup. Closed. A tornado ripped the roof off of one of the terminals last night. Oh, and there were baseball-sized hailstones falling. Thankfully, I was inside.

I have much to be thankful for these days. Here's a quick (and incomplete) list:

-Health

-Supportive and wise friends

-The opportunity and ability to help people who need help

-A bank account not in the red

-Time on the road, meeting new and cool people

-The opportunity to reach new people with my music

-A Square card reader (I'm a geek, but it's just freakin' awesome)

-A cell phone to keep in touch with family & friends

-An understanding and respectful wife who just GETS me

-Rain

I could keep going.

No one was killed - THAT is something to be thankful for.

I have been listening to Sara Bareilles a lot lately. Fanatically. Maybe even a little unhealthily. Her song "Let the Rain" says this:

"And I always felt it before

that the world was filled with much more

than the drowning soul I've learned to be

I just need the rain to remind me"

For me, rain is a reminder. Of growth. Of renewal. Of new life. It reminds me that even though my circumstances seem dreary, there is a better version of myself on the other side of this rainy day.

What "rainy" circumstance are YOU thankful for?

Greetings from the sky!

As I type this blog, I am on a plane on my way to one of several colleges out West! This particular trip has me on six different flights and four layovers so I am getting plenty of time in front of my trusty Mac.

If you've been following any of my posts, updates, tweets, or emails lately, you know that I just released my EP "Crash" January 4th. (Check it out here: www.kurtcobie.com/buy). I can't express enough how grateful and pleased I am with the way things are going with that. You all have given me great feedback and reviews on the CD and my music is reaching new ears! Thank you.

So, the CD is out. Now what? Well… a LOT. With my travels west I am meeting GREAT new people and gaining new fans. It is all pretty exciting. In January I was out in Denver (for the first time) at Johnson & Wales University. The folks out there were superb! They were really nice and even offered to take me skiing, but my trip was just too short. I guess I'll just have to go back. Whatd'ya say, Denver?? I must say, Colorado has set the bar pretty high (about a mile high). I hope these other destinations are up to the challenge (this means you Montana, Washington, Idaho, California & Oregon). I expect amazing.

Along with these college shows I am finding out that some college, indie, internet, and public radio stations have begun playing my new tunes! It is QUITE exciting to hear your own music on the radio for the first time. And there are more and more stations jumping on board each week. If you have a favorite station where you think my music might fit, let them know. You could be responsible for bringing my music to hundreds… thousands… MILLIONS of new people (really hoping for that last one). :) If you hear one of my songs on the radio, make sure you let me know about it (Facebook / Twitter).

Exciting, right?! If I weren't on a plane full of business people I would be giggling like a 4 -year-old girl and peeing my pants right now. Just kidding… a little.

Oh, and the fun doesn't stop there. I have MORE exciting things coming up which I'll be announcing soon (Official Music Video anyone?). SO, if you're not already, sign up for my monthly email updates at www.kurtscobie.com/freedownload and follow the daily posts on Facebook & Twitter. My journey is getting greater, bigger, harder, crazier, more fun, and more interesting. I hope you'll join me.

Peace.

"Crash" EP - The Process

In December, 2009 I made a trip up to Michigan for the holidays. My parents and a few of my siblings still live in southeastern Michigan where I grew up. Not only was I spending Christmas with family, but I had scheduled some studio time with a guy I knew from high school. He had had some success in the music industry and wanted me to come in to see if recording together would be a good fit. It was almost time for me to get into the studio again and so I took him up on his offer to do one song.

In just a couple sessions producer Jake Rye and I had created a near-finished song, and what would eventually be track 4 on my EP. The "New Studio Version" of "Maybe" was sounding the best I had ever heard it. The vocals were crisp and full, the piano cut through the mix amazingly and the overall production was incredibly professional. After getting the final mix I knew instantly that this business relationship was going to work very well. In addition to being an outstanding producer, Jake was fun to hang out with and a talented musician as well.

Over the first few months of 2010, Jake and I made plans and worked out the schedule for me to come to the studio. Initially, I was planning on doing a full 10-12 song album, but time, money, and wisdom suggested that an EP was the way to go. Over the summer I polished up my songs and saved up money. A few of the songs ("Your Crash", "Blank Page") were well rehearsed, but some songs weren't even finished. One song actually didn't even make it to the CD. I made the final decision on "Last Call" the first day in the studio. I had been working on another song but I didn't feel it was ready.

So, on a crisp morning, October 11th, 2010, I arrived at the Sonus Clarus studio to begin tracking. The funds had been saved, the music was ready, and so were we. It was time to make the greatest record we could. The process moved along fairly smoothly from the scratch piano to the final vocal tracking. Each piece was falling into place nicely (as I dreamed) and before I knew it, three weeks had gone by and I was heading back to Atlanta with a great excitement! Not only did I feel good about the recording, but I hadn't seen my wife in a LONG time and I was ready to be home!

November began the challenging task of listening to mixes. For someone who often gets hung up on details, critiquing song mixes can be a never ending process. Not only did I have to communicate to Jake what changes I wanted, but it was also time to bring the other pieces of the project together. I had done a photo shoot with an Atlanta photographer, Andy Brophy, in September 2010 and I had about 300 photos to sift through.

This part of the CD process seemed to take the longest. November proved to be very busy for me with conferences, a tour, Thanksgiving, and everything involved with putting this project together. Before I knew it, the Christmas season was in full swing and the CD release date was fast approaching. Some things ended up taking longer than expected and other things simply slipped through the cracks. I was getting nervous. It was the week of Christmas and "Crash" was behind schedule.

If I had to choose one word to describe my experience throughout this whole process, it would be "growth". Yes, it was fun. Yes, it was exciting. But, more than anything it was a major time of growth for me. As things got stressful and deadlines were missed, I discovered that I am a person who naturally likes to be in control. Or at least I like to feel in control. But, when it came down to crunch time, I had to give up control in order to release the CD on time. So I learned to delegate a few things out and entrust parts of this project to other people.

So, with several people working on different aspects of "Crash", the CD release show was getting closer and closer. Once I had everything submitted for the discs to be duplicated, I received an email stating that my CDs would arrive to me on January 6th (two days after the CD release show). Not good. But, after a few emails back and forth, and more over-budget spending, everything was back on schedule.

December 31st, 2010 began with a knock at my door. I was like a kid at Christmas as my "Santa Claus" (dressed in brown) delivered seven boxes full of CDs. My excitement grew as I tore open the first package to reveal my very first professional, fully produced, shrink-wrapped, bar-coded studio EP. See picture below. It was everything I dreamed of.

And the creation process of "Crash" was complete.

We had an excellent night for the CD release. I felt incredibly blessed to have so many of my friends and 'family' in one place to help celebrate. I only wish I had had the time to talk to each person individually and thank them for their support. After it all was said (sung) and done, I went home January 4th, 2011 with a deeply grateful feeling inside for everyone involved in the process. What an experience! Incredible.

And now a new process begins. I have boxes and boxes of CDs to sell, so that I can have the money to do this whole thing all over again! I am saddling up for a GREAT 2011. I hope to see you out there.

Peace.
Kurt
